Capture Extra Shifts

01.

In the business unit that was impacted by this work, certain accounts experience a high volume of freight on nights and weekends. The managers in these accounts often lack the ability to cover these loads with their own drivers. Consequently, they frequently reach out to managers in other accounts for help. As a last resort, transportation managers may outsource these loads to non-J.B. Hunt drivers, who typically charge over $2,000 more than the load's actual worth.

This work created value for our managers as well as the drivers. It gave the managers the ability to see drivers that are available to work extra shifts in their area as well as the ability to approve/deny their request. For our drivers, it gave them the ability to request for additional shifts in the DRIVE app. It also reduced the need for the drivers to come in person to the office to make a request, or try to keep up with different messages from their manager on when & where their extra shift has been approved.

The Process

Research & Discovery

I sat down with a number of different transportation managers to understand how they were being affected by this particular problem. They walked me through the current process that they had for a driver requesting an extra shift and a transportation manager trying to find coverage for a shift on nights and weekends. The drivers had a very in efficient way of requesting extra shifts & the transportation managers were juggling multiple different products in order to find coverage for shifts on nights and weekends.

We started with our first workshop, which was the ideation session. This meeting was 2hrs long. Everyone sketched their ideas, brought them to the table, and then presented their ideas. Some people wrote their ideas, some people did very simple sketches, and a couple did high fidelity mocks. The goal of the workshop was to gather everyone's view point on how we can solve the problem. To make sure we gather as many view points as possible we have the Product Owners, Business Analysts, driver representation, Developers, UX Designers, and Product Managers. This allows us to work collaboratively and leave the ideation session with a unified idea of how we want to solve the problem.

While each person is presenting, the others are taking notes on their likes, the challenges, and the what-ifs of each idea. A lot of the challenges come from the developers as they see things that are not feasible.

Final Design

Major Design Considerations

  • We gave the drivers an entry point into the request extra shifts flow on the home page of the app.

  • The driver is sent a confirmation message in his inbox once he requests an extra shift so that he can keep up with his requests.
